Due to budget cuts and changes in the city of Norfolk's application of the special events permit policy, we find ourselfs at this time (Dec 21, 2008) without a permit, approved course or estimate of municipal cost for conduct of our event. We find ourselves well beyond the timeframe for which we feel that we could adequatly plan for and conduct a successful and well attended event. It is the intent of Kale Running, the East Beach community, the Ocean View Merchants Association and the event charity Lee's Friends to work through this year's permitting issues and bring back this event in 2010. We apolgize for letting our community down. Please feel free to express your sentiments about this event to your city leaders.

Another successful East Beach Norfolk Half Marathon & 5K is in the books. What a perfect February day it was. This year we had a record 630 entrants between the three events with participants representing 13 states and coming from as far away as New Mexico.

Although the last minute course change threw us for a loop, we feel that it became a blessing in disquise. Participants were treated with two miles through the lovely shaded boulevards through the beautiful East Beach neighborhood in the beginning of the run, and in the end for the lucky half marathoners.

A special thanks goes out to the East Beach neighborhood as well as Lt Mitchell from the Norfolk Police Department who was instrumental in making the new course safe. A special thanks as well goes out to the city of Norfolk Traffic Engineering and the many officers, recruits, crossing guards, volunters etc. that collaborated on race day to provide a fun, safe and exciting run.

A final thanks goes out to all the runners who came out and put a face on this event. Because of you we were able to raise some much needed funds for Lee’s Friends and we stay motivated to make next year’s event even bigger and better.
